Gophers are one of the most commonly found rodents in the United States, and they are classified under the Geomyidae family. There are more than 35 different species of gophers that are found in different areas of North and Central America.
Appearance:
The estimated length of a San Antonio gopher uses to be 6 to 8 inches whereas the weight range goes somewhere around 0.5lbs. Their tail has a maximum length of 1 to 2 inches only; experts reveal that the tail of the gophers is smallest among other members of the rodent family that are commonly found in the United States. Few large species of gophers can even weigh as high as up to 2lbs. Note that the females are usually smaller as compared to the male counterparts. You can easily identify these rodents from their paws containing small claws, small ears, tiny eyes, short hairy tail, fur-lined pouches, large reversible pouches, protruding cheeks, and brown colored fur. They are sensitive whiskers and can also walk backward.
Life cycle:
Studies reveal that the newly born Texas gophers have week body and they are blond. These babies need around 40 days of weaning period, and they stay with their mothers until they become able to develop their own tunnels. After passing this growth phase, the Gophers can live for almost 1 to 3 years, and this is possible only if they are not targeted by a predator. Some of these species are also able to live up to 5 to 7 years if they are not affected by any disease. Some of the most common predators to these rodents are weasels, snakes, and hawks.
Habitat:
Gophers are territorial creatures, and they feel more comfortable when they are alone. They prefer to spend their time in their independent burrows. However, the female and male San Antonio gophers prefer to live together in one burrow at the time of their mating season. Although most of the Gophers are able to breed anytime in the year; most of them choose spring and summer season to breed. They often create habitats in muddy, soft soil that is covered by edible plants from all sides.
Diet:
Texas gophers prefer to eat vegetables and juicy plants. This is the main reason why most of these rodents prefer to target the agriculture fields. Some of their most preferred food materials include worms, grubs, root, shrub, carrot, lettuce, and radish.
Behavior:
All San Antonio gophers prefer to live in the underground tunnels, and they also dig for the collection of food as well. One can easily find differences between dens created by a gopher and squirrel. These creatures often prefer to dig burrows in the moist soil, and you can find the entry points at different corners of your garden or lawn. When they feel threatened, they can use their sharp teeth to bite anyone. Hence, it is important to maintain a great distance from these creatures. One gopher can create multiple dens in one area within very less time.
